India's Bollywood film industry is making a movie about Adolf Hitler's last days, according to recent media reports. “It will be a romance but not in the typical sense,” the film's director Rakesh Ranjan Kumar told the London Times. Hitler will be played by Bollywood star Anupam Kher and Eva Braun will be played by Neha Dhupia, an actress and former Miss India. The film's title is a reference to the two letters written by Mahatma Gandhi to Hitler before World War II broke out in which Gandhi referred to Hitler as "my friend." Anil Sharma, the film's producer, told Agence France-Presse that the film would present "an analytical portrayal of the ideologies followed by Hitler." "We will try to show his fears, insecurities and pressures he faced while taking crucial decisions," Sharma said. According to Thaindian news, Indians are fascinated by Hitler, who chose the ancient Hindu symbol – the swastika - for his Nazi emblem. The director said that the film’s title alluded to two letters that Gandhi wrote to the dictator, in which he addressed Hitler as “Dear Friend” before pleading he avoid startinga war. Kumar told the London Times that his film “shows Hitler’s love for India and how he indirectly contributed to Indian independence”.
The movie, titled "Dear Friend Hitler", is due to be released at the end of the year and will look at Hitler's personality as well as his relationships with Eva Braun and other associates as the Third Reich collapsed. It is said to closely resemble the 2004 German film Downfall.
