Apple, it seems, has more surprises up its sleeve. Hot on the heels of its iPhone 4 launch, Apple has unveiled a complete redesign of its Mac mini small form factor desktop.
The newest version of the Mac mini adds an HDMI port and (finally) an SD slot. It's the most recent refresh since Oct. 2009, when Apple upgraded the processor and added a server option.
At 7 inches by 7 inches by 1.4 inches (HWD), the new Mac mini is even smaller than its predecessor. Apple has integrated the power supply into the chassis, which the company says reduces overall system volume by 20 percent. It features a new sleek unibody aluminum chassis, which looks equally at home in your living room home theater setup as it does on a desk.
There are two versions of the Mac mini available. One is targeted toward the average consumer, and comes with the Mac OS X operating system. The other version comes with the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server operating system, which Apple is marketing as a system for workgroup or small business. Both versions come with 4 Gbytes of DDR3 memory (upgradeable to 8 GB) and Nvidia GeForce 320M integrated graphics. Both also feature an HDMI port, FireWire 800 port, 4 USB ports, and an SD card slot. Both offer Gigabit Ethernet and wireless connectivity in the form of AirPort Extreme 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR.
Apple has made a point of emphasizing the increased graphics power of the integrated, Nvidia GeForce 320M graphics, stating that it delivers up to twice the graphics power of the graphics solution in the previous version of the Mac mini.
The consumer-oriented Mac mini features a 2.4-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a 320 GB, 5,400-RPM hard drive. It also sports a slot-loading SuperDrive optical drive. While there are several build-to-order configurations and accessories available, this base configuration comes in at $699 (direct).
The more "business-oriented" Mac mini does away with the slot-loading optical drive. It features a faster 2.66-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and two 500-GB, 7,200-RPM hard drives (for a whopping 1 terabyte of hard drive space total). The Mac mini server version comes with Time Machine backup, Wiki Server, and Podcast Producer, and can support unlimited clients. This configuration retails for $999.
