s the last guest finishes their glass of champagne and leave one of the numerous post-award parties across New York, the 2010 Tony award season draws to a close. This year’s Tony awards have brought together an ever-larger number of celebrities and acting greats to celebrate what is known as Broadway’s night of nights. Sean Hayes was fabulous as the host this year and enjoyed dressing up as Spiderman and Annie, he even took aim at Newsweek’s Ramin Setoodeh whose comments that Hayes couldn’t play a straight man were proved wrong when he made out with Promises Promises co-star Kristin Chenoweth: With each year Broadway productions do seem to get more and more elaborate and attract quite a few well-known actors, who also seemed to score quite well out of this year’s ceremony. Denzel Washington and Viola Davies won for their roles in Fences, Catharine Zeta-Jones for A Little Night Music, Scarlet Johansson for A View from the Bridge, Best play went to Red and best (new) Musical went to Memphis. Douglas Hodge beat out Kelsey Grammer who were both nominated for their glittering lead characters in La Cage Aux Folles that also won best revival of a musical and best director in for a musical. See how can you go wrong with a musical about gay men who dress in drag what is there not to love? This year the Tony’s honoured the ever-lively Angela Lansbury with the chairman of American Theatre Wing and lifetime achievement awards to acclaimed playwright Alan Ayckbourn and veteran stage and screen actor Marian Seldes. It is great to see some of Australia’s talent make an appearance from time to time. This year it was Cate Blanchett who represented Australia in a rather interesting silver tight suit with shoulder pads that would make Joan Crawford proud. With outlandish costumes, extravagant sets and melodramatic musical numbers you can see why the Tony’s have become an institution for the American theatre scene.
