Chelsea beat off competition from Arsenal for £5m Tomas Kalas

Chelsea are said to be close to signing Sigma Olomouc centre-back Tomas Kalas for £5m, beating off competition from Arsenal and Serie A clubs.

The report carried in the Daily Express suggests Chelsea have beaten off competition from Arsenal, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich to land the 17-year-old starlet.

Premier League rivals Arsenal in particular were keen to sign Kalas, with Arsene Wenger apparently meeting with the player personally to try and sweeten a deal.

However, it seems Chelsea have pipped their London rivals to the player with his current club's website carrying a statement reading:

"A spell at a top European club for Tomas Kalas was successfully arranged today."

Kalas will remain at Sigma Olomouc for another 12 months to continue his development before joining-up with his new teammates.

Although the club name is undisclosed the Daily Express report suggests it is Chelsea with Kala's agent Pavel Zika also refusing to name his destination.

"We cannot confirm the club's name yet," he told Sport.cz.

"Negotiations were very difficult and I am glad they are behind us now, especially for the good of the player."

Carlo Ancelotti obviously has enough faith to part with a significant sum for Kalas given that he has played just one senior game.

But given that Chelsea’s current roster of stars are somewhat ageing the signing of top young European players will be encouraging to the club’s fans.

Moreover, the uncertain financial climate and the weak pound has made competing at the top end of the transfer market more difficult for English clubs, meaning that investing for the long-term future is all-important
