Six months into the year and Abhishek Bachchan is still awaiting his first release of the year. But that, of course, will be rectified soon with the release of Raavan, which happens to be his fifth film with wife Aishwarya!
So how was it working with her this time round? “There is definitely a certain comfort level when you are working with your wife, but as soon as the camera rolls and there is action, we are just co-stars. We forget what relationship we share in real life and it is only reel life that we concentrate on.
”And while we’re talking about reel life, it’s only natural to question him about the negative character that he is portraying in his forthcoming film. “Negative?” he questions before you can say any further. “Presumption is the mother of all... you know what I mean...” he says trying to remember a proverb that doesn’t exist. “Whether a character is negative or positive is just our presumption,” he elaborates. “I only play characters, and for me, the film is more important than my character,” he adds.
And the film is about the Ramayan? “Let me put it this way – the movie is about Ravana and not Ramayan,” he laughs. And how would that be? “Well, the epic is so vast that we can see part of it being reflected not only in various movies, but also in real life. For a fact, even Maa used to tell me bedtime stories when I was a kid which were loosely based on our epics,” he says evading questions about particulars of the film.
But there’s more excitement in Abhishek’s life than the upcoming release of his film. For one, there’s his impending visit to South Africato watch the FIFA World Cup. “I have always been a diehard football fan,” he says. So which team is he cheering for? “I’m a Brazil supporter. All my loyalties are for that team. And FIFA this time is really going to be a lot of fun to watch,” he gushes.
But isn’t the FIFA fever bothering him considering that it could affect the Box Office success of Raavan? “Naa... There is so much entertainment everywhere today, that there isn’t any need to be threatened by any of it. There’s so much happening all the time – there is T20 World Cup, the IPL and FIFA, the saas bahu sagas and... the list is endless. I don’t think a movie’s success gets affected by any of those factors,” says Bachchan Jr confidently.
I miss Thaggu ke Laddoo!
“I miss being in UP ya..,” says Bachchan Jr as he goes on to add, ‘Every city there has a special place in my heart; especially Lucknow and Kanpur. I still have the Tundey ke kebabs ka taste in my mouth. Mmmm... They are just too yummy!’ That’s not all. ‘Nothing in this world can beat the taste of Kanpur’s Thaggu ke laddoo. I really need to visit these cities soon,’ he adds.
So what’s stopping him from coming here? ‘I have had extensive shooting schedules all this while. I’m hardly getting time to travel anywhere in the country. This is the reason why I have been after Shaad (director of Bunty Aur Babli) to plan a sequel to Bunty Aur Babli, so that I can travel to my favourite cities in UP soon. This will be the best excuse to come to UP!’ he says.
And though Abhishek may not come to Lucknow and Kanpur, he definitely has plans for some other cities in the state. ‘Post the release of Raavan, I have asked Mani (Ratnam) to plan a tour to Allahabad and Banaras to promote the movie there, so that I finally get a chance to visit at least two of my favourite cities.’
