A lovemaking scene between Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor was toned down by Rajneeti director Prakash Jha in order to obtain a UA certificate from the Censor Board.
Jha protested the change recommended by the revising committee, because he considered the scene absolutely essential to the narrative. However, the board headed by former justice Usha Mehra didn't relent.
With the scene intact, the film would have got an A certificate, something Jha wasn't willing to accept. An adult only film not only reduces the size of the potential audience, it also gives the impression of a sleazy film.
"The love scene was absolutely essential. Unlike other directors I had not shot extra footage so that the censors could take away whatever portion they liked. I had shot the love making scene exactly the way it was meant to be. I've had to reduce it by half," Jha says.
In addition to the love making scene, several instances of F-word usage have also been bleeped out.
"I've also had to beep out the F-word uttered by Ranbir Kapoor and Arjun Rampal in two different places in the plot. Ex-justice Usha Mehra, who headed the Tribunal, requested me to do away with the F-word. But it didn't make a difference," he said.
U/A certificate given to Rajneeti, A few scenes required to be cut
Rajneeti, a long awaited movie is ready to hit the cinemas next week as the Censor Board has shown the green signal to it. The movie was passed when the director Prakash Jha agreed to cut the violent scenes & the other some homosexuality references.
The Censor Board referred the movie to Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT). FCAT gave a green signal and a U/A certificate which meant that the movie is ‘Unrestricted Public Exhibition with parental guidance for children below 12 years’. This was given with a rider which said that the director will remove the said dialogues and scenes.
A senior Board Official said that the Tribunal members have seen the movie. They found a few scenes to be violent and abusive language is been used in the movie. Also, there are a few references been given to homosexuality which is not been ordered to be deleted.
The officials have discharged the reports which said that the role of Katrina Kaif has resembled the character of the Congress President Sonia Gandhi. According to the officials, Katrina’s character had no resemblance with Sonia Gandhi and there were no such objectionable dialogues related to any character of the movie.
When asked from Prakash Jha, he refused to admit that the board has directed him to delete a few scenes. Jha told the PTI that, "You have to ask them (Tribunal) whether there is a rider or not. All I know is that my film has got a U/A certificate".
In the meantime, the Information & Broadcasting Ministry has denied to say anything in this regard. A senior I&B official said, "The censor board is a quasi-judicial body, whose decisions are binding on filmmakers. The ministry cannot influence or intervene in its functioning."
The movie is a multi-starrer starring, Katrina Kaif, Ajay Devgan, Ranbir Kapoor, Manoj Bajpai and Nana Patekar and is actually a story of a family which is been held in the dynasty politics. The movie is scheduled to be released on June 4.
